Community Flooding

CURRENT CLASS: Senior Capstone

Many areas in the South Atlanta community experience heavy flooding after heavy rains. Seniors Mya Baker and Anthony Mitchell are continuing work on a former project regarding the flooding of Poole Creek to address flooding in the areas that the school serves.  Their solution will be presented at an upcoming community hackathon.

Lack of Fresh Food Options

CURRENT CLASS(ES): Biology and Chemistry

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines an urban food desert as a non-affluent where a substantial number of residents are more than a mile from a supermarket, grocery store or other fresh food option that provides fresh produce at affordable prices. Based on this definition, South Atlanta lies in a food desert or a place that is considered “ low access.” Considering the South Atlanta community is home to the nation's largest free urban food forest, too few community residents are aware of it or of the health advantages of having access to fresh food.

Trash Dumping

Large amounts of trash and old furniture are constantly being dumped along Hutchens Rd (where the school is located) and on Forrest Park Rd. (a road that runs behind the school).

Rodent Infestation

There has been an increase in rodent infestation due to the development and growth of the city. Trash dumping experienced by many neighborhoods makes the issue worse.

Negative Impact of Gentrification

Community amenities such as the Urban Food Forest at Browns Mill and Lake Charlotte Nature Preserve are attracting real estate investors and interested residents to the South Atlanta area and therefore threatening the current community population.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Many homes in the South Atlanta area are older and therefore do not have the appropriate carbon monoxide detectors. The neighborhood planning unit is working to inform community residents and help them to get an updated device.
