We Are South Atlanta.

We try to exemplify a strong commitment to our mantra, Advocating for the Community Through STEM, by centering as many lessons. project based learning experiences and explorations around community issues and problems. Therefore our students and the community that surrounds South Atlanta are the most important components our STEM initiative.

The City of Atlanta has over 240 neighborhoods each of which belongs to one of twenty-five Neighborhood Planning Units (NPUs) named for each letter of the alphabet (with the exception of U). These planning units discuss issues related to land use, transportation, housing, economic development, nature, historic preservation, and other aspects of the area. The South Atlanta High School district zone serves families of NPU-Z and a small bit of NPU-Y, both of which are in either District 1 or 12 of the Atlanta City Council. South Atlanta High School is in the South River Gardens Neighborhood which is one of 13 neighborhoods in NPU-Z and a part of District 12.

The surrounding South Atlanta High School area has its challenges but it is rich in opportunity and resources. It is the home to the following:

LAKE CHARLOTTE NATURE PRESERVE. 216 acres of one of Atlanta's largest mature forests.

SOUTH RIVER. One of America's most endangered rivers.

SOUTH-VIEW CEMETERY. Established by former slaves and their free-born children to provide a dignified resting place for their deceased loved ones. It was the original resting place for Dr. Martin Luther King and Dr. Benjamin E. Mays and is the resting place for many other notable African-American scholars, pastors, business owners, educators and civil rights leaders such as Rep. John Lewis.

URBAN FOOD FOREST AT BROWNS MILL. The nation's largest free food forest. Note: a food forest increases the harvest by stacking crops and growing vertically.

Faculty and students have present updates regarding our school at both the South River Gardens Community Organization Meetings and NPU-Z Meetings. Most of the presentation topics include updates regarding our STEM initiative.  Students have presented current projects and faculty have discussed ways that the community can engage with students.  As of January 2022, South Atlanta High School is a standing agenda item at the monthly South River Gardens Community Organization meetings. At South Atlanta, the community is our greatest muse and our greatest teacher - so any and all are welcome to join us as we provide rich educational experiences for our students.
