HOSA

HOSA is an important part of our Healthcare Pathway curriculum.  Through its network of state and local chapters, HOSA provides a number of resources for students such as powerful instructional tools, recognition, leadership, networking, scholarships, and connections to the healthcare industry to thousands of members across the United States. Additionally, through the HOSA Competitive Events Program, students are allowed to compete in teams or as individuals in over 55 different events related to all aspects of the health care industry.

Most HOSA participants are also Healthcare Pathway students. If students are not in that pathway, HOSA recruitment typically happens in early fall and competitions are held in the spring of each school year. If students are interested in participating, they should contact Ms. Yesenia Combs (yxcombs@atlanta.k12.ga.us) or Ms. Shequita Foster (Shequita.Foster@atlanta.k12.ga.us).

Contests + Competitions

Science Fair

Students participate in the Science Fair each year either through a course or through independent study. Each year since the start of our STEM initiative we have had participants in the school Science Fair however in the last three years we have had participants who placed at the district level and a few that have been selected for state and  International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) participation.

The school level Science Fair is held each December and therefore the opportunity for this year has passed. If you are interested in participating during the 2022-23 school year, please notify your Science teacher or Ms. Andrea P. Miller at apmiller@atlanta.k12.ga.us.  Interested 10th graders should heavily consider applying to Project ENGAGES.

Technology Fair

Students at South Atlanta High School have the opportunity to enter the Atlanta Public Schools district Technology Fair. First place winners are invited to compete in the Georgia Educational Student Technology Competition (GASTC). The GASTC is the highest level of student technology competition in Georgia with over 750 projects, representing the work of 1000+ students, judged at the competition each March.

Technology Fair entries are submitted in early January and therefore the opportunity for this year has passed. If you are interested in participating during the 2023-24 school year, please contact Ms. Waters-Winston at Andrea.Waterswins@atlanta.k12,ga.us.

STEM Up Youth Maker Challenge

This competition is open to middle and high school-aged students who are part of STEM programs or initiatives in the United Way of Greater Atlanta's 13 county footprint. Up to three finalists are selected each year to receive a monetary award up to $2,500.00 to support the implementation of their innovative idea. This live competition modeled after the television show “Shark Tank” is an opportunity for young people in our region to use their ideas, voice, and leadership to improve our communities.
